What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Mailing List

This website has a mailing list which requests the subscriber’s email address in order to send blog updates and related content from the website owner. This mailing list is managed by the Newsletter plugin.

Newsletter stores subscriber’s emails and IPs in this website’s database and does not transfer any data to any other website. Subscribers are given the option to change the email they wish to have on the mailing list as well as well as which types of emails they wish to receive. Such changes are recorded and timestamped in the website’s database.

Emails are retained indefinitely as long as a subscriber remains subscribed to the mailing list service. If emails are not able to reach the email, whether through an invalid email or a client that does not accept the newsletters, or the subscriber chooses to unsubscribe, the subscriber’s information will be permanently deleted from the database within 6 months.

Contact forms

This website uses a contact form provided through the Ninja Forms plugin, which collects the name, email address, and message content. The name and email address are retained for the singular purpose of allowing the website owner to respond to queries made through the form.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

This website uses the WP Statistics plugin by Verona Labs. This plugin allows the website owner to track the number of hits per page/post, the number of unique visitors on the website, and referring websites and search engines.

This plugin does not collect, store or send any visitor’s personal data.

Who we share your data with

We do not share personal data with any other websites.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment or contact us through the contact form, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Anti-spam services are provided by Akismet, which collects IP address, user agent, referrer, and the site URL, along with other information directly provided by the commenter.
